I know this is an unpopular opinion, but I genuinely think the ending to the original xxxHolic manga was very good and very in-line with who Watanuki is.
Of course he gives up his happiness and life for the shop and for Yuuko.
He does NOT respect himself. He sees no value in his own life. I know a lot of people are upset by this, especially considering the spider-lady arc and how Yuuko and Doumeki try hammering into Watanuki’s head that he matters to them but I have to ask
Did you really expect that to work?
I’m probably going to get a little personal, but as someone who doesn’t see a lot of value in themselves, I find it really great to not have Watanuki suddenly decide he matters and that people care about him just because of one incident. That’s not how people work. That’s not how Watanuki works. That’s not how I work. Despite being relatively financially stable, living with my boyfriend, and having friends I can confide in, I still struggle with feeling like I matter. I have people who tell me they love me every day, and it is still hard for me to believe them.
I think Watanuki is the same. I don’t think he sees value in himself, and I think he needed more constant reassurance that he had value, that his life had meaning. And I think it’s very naive to think Watanuki can just get over that sort of mentality so easily. One incident will not change a lifetime of self-loathing. Loving yourself takes time, and I don’t think Watanuki gave himself time to reflect on it.
I think Watanuki also took the wrong message from that arc as well - he didn’t take it as “find merit in yourself and your person” but “find merit in what you do”. When taken in that sort of context, of course he would take over the shop. Of course he would destroy his own happiness. He wants to find merit in himself somehow, and becoming someone important is how he manifests that. By taking over the shop, he becomes one of the most powerful and influential people alive. He is able to communicate with spirits and mystical beings, and can take care of people who travel across dimensions. He is, in essence, a very powerful, and important, person because of the work he does for others, playing once more into his selfless behaviour.
He found merit in what he does. But not who he is. I can only hope that he finds a healthy balance for both in xxxHolic Rei.
